Encountering Cyclists on the Roadway

According to the Governor's Highway Safety Association, the number of cyclists killed in traffic accidents has risen since 2015. To ensure the safety of cyclists and to prevent motorists from becoming involved in collisions, the GHSA offers a few tips.

Cyclists need to wear helmets and stay alert at all times. They must obey traffic signals and clearly signal their intentions on the road. If riding at night, the front and rear of the bike must have some form of light in order to make the vehicle to motorists. Cyclists should also always ride with the flow of traffic.

Likewise, motorists must obey traffic signs. Stay alert at all times. Watch for cyclists and pedestrians who might enter the roadway. When seeing a cyclist, allow at least three feet of clearance when passing. However, only pass a bike if it is safe.
